Tracing the development of distributed algorithms from Leslie Lamport through replicated databases and filesharing. We take a quick look at some of the major technical challenges like synchronization and mutual exclusion. Problems were solved one step at a time to the point where we have deployed may systems that are not vulnerable to any single point of failure.
We will look at how social challenges shaped the technology. We also look at how the technology may influence our expectations about society. Anticipating those changes will help us build an intuition for project potential.
